“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back to whence we came” - John F. Kennedy.

There is something incredibly calming about looking at a huge body of water. The endless expanse of sapphire is soothing to the nerves and for those few minutes, your problems seem insignificant compared to the vastness lying before you.

It is thus no wonder that water bodies are popular holiday spots. Whether it’s the sunny sands of the beach, or the lush greenery of the backwaters, being close to the water is one of the first choices of the avid holidaymaker. But what if you could holiday at the heart of all that water – under the ocean?

Yes, we’re talking about holidaying underwater! To be precise, we’re talking about staying at one of the few luxury hotels that are completely submerged under water. Here is a list of the world’s top 5 underwater hotels to indulge your wildest dreams in.

The Manta Resort, Pemba

This is the ideal place for a detoxification – from busy, noisy city life that's filled with excess of connectivity and social media. Simplicity and minimalism seem to be the key words at The Manta Resort, with no TV, music or shopping and just simple fare on the menu, made from locally sourced ingredients and fish.

But the most unique feature has got to be their underwater room, where you can spend a night among the fish. Of course, they have lots of activities for divers, but even if you’re not a diver, it doesn’t stop you from spending a night underwater. A boat takes you out to the private island and you’re provided with meals, a kayak and diving gear. The rest of the time you’re left alone to enjoy the beautiful blue expanse around you.

Utter Inn, Sweden

Also called the ‘Otter Inn’ in English, this was originally created as an art project by the artist, Mikael Genberg. The inn is actually a single room hotel, located 3 km under water. On the surface, is the very quaint little red cottage, with white doors and a fence around it.

Visitors are taken to the cottage, which is 1 km away from land, by canoe. They then descend into their underwater room via a little staircase where they can relax on their beds. If you’re used to waking up to the chirping of birds, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at waking up to some fish poking their noses at your windows. It’s like you’re in an aquarium and they’re watching you from outside! You can also explore the area around by canoe or sunbathe on the porch of the red cottage.

onrad Rangali Island, Maldives

The Conrad Rangali Island is like a piece of paradise that has broken off and landed on earth. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean and a coral reef, there are a variety of activities for visitors. While regular water sports like sailing and water cycling are popular, what stands out in this resort is the Nemo Sub, a personal submarine that resembles the character from the famous movie. You get a lovely ride around under water and can take in the wonders of ocean life.

To add to this experience, you can have your next meal at the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, located 16 feet below sea level. Of course the cuisine is mouthwatering, but nothing can compare to the walls and roof made fully of glass. The effect is surreal!

Jules Undersea Lodge, Florida, United States

Named appropriately after Jules Verne, the author of ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’. And under the sea it is - the lodge is 21 feet beneath the surface and you cannot get there other than by scuba diving! This is an adventure that’s certainly not for the weak hearted, but if you don’t know scuba diving, don’t worry. The lodge also offers Diving Certifications so that you can go ahead and take in the wonders of the lodge.

The best part of the lodge is that it suits everyone – if you want to relax, you can just have a laidback time with their hot showers, fully functional kitchen, books, movies and music. If you’d like more adventure, there’s ample opportunity for that as well - learn about marine biology, have a dive followed by a pizza lunch, or even have a classroom under the sea! That’s not all, if you’d like the most important day of your life to be even more special, you can even arrange your wedding there!! That is, if all your guests can dive!

Poseidon Undersea Resort, Fiji

The Poseidon Undersea Resort is yet to open reservations, although more than a lakh of people have registered and are waiting for their doors to open. Touted to be the world’s first five star underwater resort, the project has been taking its own sweet time, but promises to make up for the delay with the facilities it plans to offer.

The resort is all set to include fine dining, libraries, boutiques, golf course, tennis courts and more. You can even get your very own submarine to cruise through the reef that is teeming with all kinds of sea creatures. A vision that has to be seen to be believed.

An underwater vacation might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it might go on that list of ‘things I’d like to try’. Don’t wait too long; make the trip whenever you get a chance. After all, it’s not your everyday holiday by the beach!
